Milton’s John Tonelli Sports Centre is getting a much-needed upgrade.

Both the federal and provincial governments along with the Town of Milton announced, Thursday, joint funding totalling nearly $1.4 million for improvements to the aging recreation facility.

The Government of Canada, through the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure Stream (CCRIS) of the Investing in Canada plan, is investing $558,655 in the project.

The Government of Ontario is adding $465,499, while the Town of Milton is providing $372,483.

Catherine McKenna, the Canadian Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, was on hand with Milton MP Adam Van Koeverden and Milton MPP Parm Gill to make the announcement.

She called recreation centres the heart of Canada’s towns and cities.

“Federal support to upgrade the John Tonelli Sports Centre in Milton will breathe new life into this vital community hub so new generations of kids can play, learn new skills and hang out with friends,” McKenna said.

“Canada’s infrastructure plan invests in thousands of projects, creates job across the country, and builds cleaner, more inclusive communities.”

Projects to rehabilitate aging components of the facility, included work on replacing the 8,000 square feet of sport flooring in an effort to provide a safer surface for skaters.

With the investment, the safety and durability of the arena’s infrastructure will be improved.

“This is exciting news that expands the lifespan of John Tonelli Sports Centre, creating even more possibilities for the residents of Milton,” said Milton Mayor Gordon Krantz.

Work also includes wooden spectator benches being be replaced with better quality seating and the removal, regrading, and repaving of the parking lot and associated roadways that will improve access to the facility and other amenities located at Bronte Meadows Park.

“The renovation is going to go a long way in supporting our health and active recovery from COVID-19 and in further sporting our healthy active living right here at home,” Van Koeverden said.

Across the province, the federal government has invested more than $8.2 billion in over 2,780 infrastructure projects.
