The Milton fire department has issued a reminder about the dangers of cooking fires and has provided safety tips for the community.

According to the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs (OAFC), cooking is the number one cause of residential fires in Ontario.

Along with being alert, it’s important to always remain in the kitchen while cooking and to keep flammable items away from the stove.

While using the stove, residents should wear tight-fitting or rolled-up sleeves as loose clothing can easily catch on fire.

It’s also important to keep combustible items such as cooking utensils, dishcloths, paper towels and pot holders a safe distance from the stove.

Residents should have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed on every storey of their homes that are tested every month and have a fire safety plan in place in case of an emergency.
