The Milton fire department has issued grilling safety tips for the community amid BBQ season.

According to the Milton fire department, July is the peak month for grill fires and roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns.

Residents are reminded that propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors and that they should be placed well away from homes, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. It’s important to never leave grills unattended.

Children and pets should be kept at least three feet away from the grill area.

It’s also important to keep grills clean by removing grease or fat buildup from both the grills and in trays below the grill and to always make sure the gas grill lid is open prior to lighting it.

If residents smell gas while cooking, they are advised to immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department.

Additionally, residents are advised to not move the grill. If the flame goes out, the grill and gas should be turned off for at least five minutes before attempting to re-light it.
