Milton councillors have given themselves a raise and doubled the amount of eligible benefits they will receive.

The move means that as of November 15 of this year, councillors will get an increase of $1,363 per year which means each of the eight councillors will earn $44,468. The mayor’s salary will remain the same at $124, 251.

As well, councillors will see their benefits rise from 50 per cent to 100 per cent coverage paid by the Town beginning in November. The new package will also see increases to the extended health and dental benefit plan.

A report presented to council indicated that remuneration is reviewed every four years, usually before the end of the term and before the next election. The amount of increase that was recommended in the report was determined based on the comparison of other municipalities. As well, the report indicated several other municipalities provided better benefits than what Milton councillors currently have.

The report goes on to say the total impact of the compensation hike will be $12,419 a year while the impact of the benefits could range from $12,312 to $46,592 depending on how many of the councillors enrol in the program.
