Milton bans all open-burning as air quality continues to be unhealthy

An open burn ban is now in effect in Milton as the Town continues to deal with the effects of wildfires in Quebec and eastern Ontario.

The Air Quality Index, monitored by Halton Region, reached nine and the 1-10 scale yesterday, considered high risk.

The town-wide ban applies to all open-air burning, even if a burn permit has been approved.

The Special Air Quality Statement from the Region updated this morning, June 8, says high levels of air pollution have developed due to smoke from forest fires.

Smoke plumes from forest fires in Quebec and northeastern Ontario have resulted in deteriorated air quality. Poor air quality may persist into the weekend.

Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.

People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke.

Stop outdoor activities and contact your health care provider if you or someone in your care experiences shortness of breath, wheezing (including asthma attacks), severe cough, dizziness or chest pains. Stay inside if you are feeling unwell and experiencing symptoms.
