Mental health clinic returns to St. Catharines’ Pen Centre

Pathstone Mental Health will re-open at the Pen Centre on Glendale Ave in St. Catharines, offering walk-in clinic services to the Niagara community from a permanent location, starting January 16.

The move follows a pilot project where Pathstone had a Pop-Up Shop for five weeks at the Pen Centre and quickly saw the popularity and demand for their services in that central high traffic location.

While the pilot project was a five day per week clinic, due to staff shortages, the new permanent office at Pen Centre will offer a Monday and Friday walk-in clinic from 10 am to 7:30 pm on Mondays and 10:30 am until 6:30 pm on Fridays.

“We wanted to continue our forward momentum, in step with our mission to bring mental health support to every corner of our community,” said Kim Rossi, Pathstone Director of Fundraising & Communications.

“This walk-in clinic space at the Pen Centre will remain to be safe and supportive for all, offering mental health support to children and youth up to their 18th birthday as well as their families.”

 Through surveys, completed by clients who used their walk-in clinics anywhere in Niagara, Pathstone discovered the following:

  • The average walk-in clinic client is 12 years old.
  • 49 per cent want to learn coping skills.
  • 21 per cent are struggling with Anxiety
  • 12 per cent are seeking ongoing counselling
  • 9 per cent are avoiding school
  • 9 per cent have behavioural issues

This permanent space at the Pen Centre becomes Pathstone’s 10th in-person walk-in clinic in Niagara. Other regional locations stretch from Fort Erie through to Grimsby.

“As with our pilot, a generous partnership with the Pen Centre is how this space on a permanent basis is possible. From the inception of our first walk-in clinic to our tenth, we rely on funding though donors to maintain and grow this program,” said Rossi.
