A special ride is being held for a cyclist who was killed on an Oakville road last week.

The Oakville Ghost Bike Memorial Ride will be held this Sunday (March 19) at the Oakville Go Station in honour of the unknown cyclist who died after being hit by a vehicle last Thursday (March 9).

The event, which is being organized by Joey Schwartz, Jo Koga and Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists, will have riders meet at 10 a.m. in the north parking lot of the Go Station, located at 214 Cross Ave.

The riders will depart at 10:15 a.m. and ride approximately five kilometres to the site of the fatal collision on Upper Middle Rd. They will then ride back to the Oakville Go Station.

The ride is scheduled to go rain, snow or shine.

Halton Regional Police responded around 11 a.m. last Thursday to a collision between the cyclist and motor vehicle at Upper Middle Rd., west of Eighth Line.

A grey 4-door vehicle was travelling eastbound on Upper Middle Rd. when it struck a cyclist that was heading in the same direction.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the collision and cooperated with investigators.

The cyclist was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries and a short time later they succumbed to their injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit took over the investigation.

Halton police are asking that any witnesses of the collision or residents who be in possession of video surveillance footage in the area of Eighth Line and Upper Middle Rd. contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 905-825-4747, ext. 5065.
