Mayors from other cities want Mississauga residents to stay away

In the wake of the province’s decision to move Peel and Toronto back into lockdown this coming Monday, a few mayors from other cities are asking Peel residents to stay away for the time being.

Among them are Vaughan mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Markham mayor Frank Scarpitti, who took to Twitter today to ask residents from Peel and Toronto to stay in their own municipalities and not travel to York.

“I urge residents in Toronto and Peel to remain in their municipalities and to not travel to York Region at this time. We must continue to follow public health advice and do our part to protect our family, friends and neighbours,” said Bevilacqua.

Scarpitti similarly asked residents from the affected areas not to travel to York for the purposes of meeting family and friends, running errands, or doing holiday shopping.

At the moment, York Region remains in the Control (Red) level, meaning it won’t be going back into lockdown like Peel Region.

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement on Friday that Peel (Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon) and Toronto would be going into lockdown starting Monday, November 23. 

The lockdown will last at least 28 days. 

“These necessary measures are being taken to limit community transmission of COVID-19 in order to keep schools open, safeguard health system capacity, and protect the province’s most vulnerable populations,” the province said in a news release.
