In response to the first confirmed case of the coronavirus in Mississauga, Mayor Bonnie Crombie has issued a statement.

In the statement, Crombie emphasized the fact that Peel Public Health is doing to contain the potential spread of the virus.
Currently, Peel Public Health is investigating the places the infected individual has been and anyone who may have come into contact with them.

Crombie also confirmed Toronto Pearson International Airport is working closely with Health Canada and the Canadian Border Services Agencies to prevent further spread of the COVID-19 virus.

In order to protect travellers and airport staff, additional screening measures have been implemented for people who may be at risk of carrying the virus.

Further, Crombie specified Trillium Health Partners, Peel Paramedics, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services and health care providers are working to ensure all necessary emergency planning, monitoring and response protocols are being followed.

“Given the growing global nature and spread of this virus, residents are understandably concerned. I share those concerns and want to assure them that our medical professionals and first responders are working in unison, 24/7 to protect Peel and limit the spread of the virus. The risk of transmission to the public continues to remain low,” Crombie said in the statement.

Anyone who begins showing symptoms, which include fever, coughing, and trouble breathing, is urged to self-isolate and contact Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700. Additionally, anyone who requires immediate medical attention is instructed to contact 9-1-1 and advise the operator of their symptoms.
