After a public outcry, a beloved Toronto theatre says it’s not closing anytime soon.
The south Etobicoke theatre, Cineplex Cinemas Queensway, addressed concerns with a social media post on Tuesday.
“We’re aware of the attention Cineplex Cinemas Queensway & VIP has received lately and are happy to share its credits won’t be rolling anytime soon,” the theatre said on Linkedin. “Yesterday, we had two exterior banners installed outside the building to act as a visible reminder of our ongoing commitment to the Queensway community.”
Located at 1025 The Queensway, Cineplex Cinemas Queensway boasts 20 screens, 9,000 square metres of space, two storeys and a surface parking lot for 1,277 vehicles, making it one of the largest movie theatres in the Greater Toronto Area.
However, a massive development is planned for the property with a mix of residential, commercial, institutional, and public spaces across a series of buildings ranging from seven to 46 storeys. The project could bring 4,222 residential units to the property.
This June, the City of Toronto approved the project, but community opposition has been building for nearly a year.
A petition opposing the demolition of the theatre, started in September 2024, now has over 14,500 signatures.
“Cineplex Queensway has been an entertainment cornerstone for south Etobicoke’s community – from couples on a date, teenager hangout, friend outings, young families, moms with their babies at Stars & Strollers and even senior groups,” the petition description reads.
“But now, there’s a proposal to tear it down for yet another major multi-tower condo complex with no indicators that the movie/entertainment options would be protected or rebuilt. Our city needs more than just condos, it needs spaces for entertainment, culture, and community-building.”
While the development project has been approved, the Cineplex said it is not leaving anytime soon. The theatre told the CBC that the theatre has signed a new lease agreement for 20 years.
“Since 2001, the theatre has been more than a place to watch movies – it’s an entertainment and social hub for family outings, date nights and fun times with friends,” Cineplex said on Linkedin. “We are looking forward to continuing to be a part of the Queensway community’s movie memories for many years to come.”
