Mississauga and Brampton students will no longer have to wear masks when they return to classes after March Break, despite moves by several other GTA school boards and educators to keep the face covering mandate in place.

As of today (March 11), both the Peel District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board plan to abide by the Ontario government’s lifting of the mask mandate in schools and other public places effective March 21.

However, in communications with parents and staff, both school boards say that any students, teachers and other staffers who want to continue wearing masks inside schools can do so if they choose.

The provincial government has met with some resistance with respect to its allowing the masks to come off in schools–especially the first day after March Break.

Groups representing teachers, vice-principals and principals are pushing Premier Doug Ford’s government to keep the mask mandate in place at schools either for a few weeks longer or until the end of the school year.

Yesterday (March 10), the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board  approved a motion that will attempt to keep masking in schools in place until April 15, despite the Province’s order to drop the mandate March 21.

And both the Catholic and public school boards in Toronto are asking for the mandate to remain in schools for an extended period.
