Maple Leafs add Thorold native to bolster losses on defence

At the moment, Thorold native Conor Timmins will be playing for the Toronto Marlies, who have lost some defencemen to the Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs traded to get Thorold native Conor Timmins to help shore up the defence corps in their AHL affiliate Toronto Marlies.

Recent injuries to the big league squad’s defence meant the Leafs had to dip into the Marlies’ pool, bringing up defencemen Mac Hollowell and Victor Mete.

Since that meant the Marlies were suddenly thin on defence, Toronto traded minor-league forward Curtis Douglas to the Arizona Coyotes to get Timmins in return.

Due to a concussion he got in his final year of junior hockey, Timmins has only seen sporadic duty at the major league level, collecting just seven assists through 41 career NHL games split between Arizona and Colorado.

However, he was a well-regarded player through his time at the junior level, playing for both the Thorold Blackhawks and the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Now 24 years old, Timmins has three assists in six games with Arizona’s farm team, the Tucson Roadrunners, and has played twice this season for the Coyotes.

He helped Canada win gold at the 2018 world junior championship.

At the moment, the Maple Leafs defensive squad has been rocked with injuries. Jake Muzzin is out with a neck injury that could spell the end of his career while Morgan Rielly is also on long-term injured reserve with a serious knee injury. T.J. Brodie is also out with an injured oblique.
