Calgary resident Mike Meldrum and his wife sat and envisioned what they’d do if they won the lottery.
Meldrum heard that someone in Calgary had won a big jackpot, but he hadn’t yet checked his ticket, the Western Canada Lottery Corporation said in a release Tuesday.
Meldrum has played Lotto 6/49 weekly for 35 years and had dreamed of winning for a long time.
And sure enough, his time has come.
He won $5 million in the June 18 Lotto 6/49 draw, matching six out of six numbers in the classic draw.
“[My partner and I] sat and mapped out what we would do if we won before we looked,” he said.
When he realized he had won and told his wife, she didn’t believe him at first, the release said.
“She told me to send her the numbers so she could check online herself,” Meldrum said.
Now they can act on their dreams but despite envisioning their win, they still have some planning to do now that the windfall is a reality.
“Our cars are about ten years old, so we’re thinking maybe new vehicles,” he said.
“I have some decisions to make about continuing work, too.”
And while they don’t have travel booked just yet, when they do travel, Meldrum said they can stay longer while vising his wife’s family.
“It doesn’t feel real,” he said.
Meldrum bought the winning ticket at a 7-Eleven in Calgary.
