Niagara Police have charged a Niagara Falls man they believed is connected to fatal hit-and-run on a pedestrian on July 2.

On that day, Niagara Police were called to the Welland Street and Willoughby Drive area of Chippewa after reports of a woman in her 70s being hit by a car. Initially treated by bystanders, the Niagara EMS quickly got her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The investigation determined that the victim had been crossing the road when she was struck by a pickup truck, which then fled the scene.

The identity of the deceased woman was never released, however, the police continued to search for a suspect. Today (July 14), a man turned himself into police.

Chris Spagnol of Niagara Falls has been charged with failing to report an accident and careless driving causing death.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing today at the courthouse in St. Catharines.

Anyone who may have information about this incident is asked to contact detectives at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009433.
