A man didn’t see an email notifying him that he won a large lottery prize in Ontario.

But thanks to a reminder message, he eventually did realize that he won big.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation said in a news release that Markham resident Peter Hedgecock won $1 million in the Lotto 6/49 gold ball draw on March 29.

The father of three has been playing the lottery with the OLG for around 20 years and this marks his first big win.

He bought the winning ticket on OLG.ca, the release said.

“I hadn’t seen the original email OLG sent about my win,” Hedgecock said.

“I only realized I’d won big when I received a second reminder email. When I read it, I was in a state of shock — half of me didn’t believe it. Thank goodness they send those reminders.”

Hedgecock then went to tell his wife the big news.

“I went to bed and whispered to her, ‘Honey, we won $1 million.’ She was half asleep and told me to go away!” he said.

Hedgecock said he will be using the money for his retirement, with no big decisions made yet on what exactly he will do with the winnings.
