One man is dead after a flying tire crashed into the car he was driving on the QEW near the Mississauga-Oakville border just before noon today (Oct. 18).
OPP say the man was driving in the eastbound lanes just west of Winston Churchill Blvd. when his vehicle was struck by the fast-moving wheel, which police say fell off a westbound vehicle before bouncing over the median into eastbound traffic.
Two other vehicles were struck by the tire, but there were no injuries reported.
OPP said they’re still investigating and cannot yet say definitively if the tire fell off a transport truck, but it’s believed the wheel did come from a tractor-trailer.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the driver of the vehicle that lost its wheel may not even be aware of the incident at this time.
All QEW eastbound lanes are closed while police investigate.
