A man in his 20s is dead after a Wednesday night fire burned through the floor of a two-storey home in Hamilton’s Westdale area.

Fire crews arrived at 111 Traymore Ave., between Dalewood and Forsyth avenues, at around 8:15 p.m. to find heavy smoke in the area and visible flames on the second floor at the rear of the home.

“Firefighters quickly accessed the building to begin both search and rescue and firefighting operations,” said fire chief David Cunliffe. “On the second floor, crews reported heavy fire and a hole in the floor.”

While searching the second floor, firefighters found one person and evacuated them from the building by ladder.

“The person was quickly placed in the care of paramedics and transported to hospital,” added Cunliffe. “Unfortunately, the person succumbed to their injuries in hospital.”

Crews extinguished the fire on the second fire and remained on the scene Wednesday night, dealing with hotspots.

The Ontario fire marshall has been notified and will assist with the investigation.

No other injuries have been reported.
