Man in custody following daylight Mississauga bank robbery

A man is in custody after a bank in Mississauga was robbed on Tuesday.

A man walked into one of the banks near Derry Rd W and McLaughlin Rd, an area home to shopping plazas with both a Royal Bank and a Bank of Montreal, around 2 p.m. on August 22.

The robber then gave a handwritten note demanding cash to a bank teller. The teller followed the instructions on the note and handed over an unspecified amount of cash.

The robber then left the the bank and fled the area on foot.

Peel Region Police kicked off a “detailed” investigation and canvassed the area. During the search they found discarded evidence left behind by the robber.

Investigators used the collected evidence to identify a suspect. They tracked the man down to local hotel on August 23. He was driving a grey car of unspecified make and model at the time.

The man, Thamiran Amirthaganesan, 30 of Mississauga, has been charged with robbery and wearing a disguise. Amirthaganesan appeared was held in custody until a bail hearing August 25.
