Man faces firearm charges after shooting himself during attempted home invasion in Hamilton: police

A man is facing multiple firearm-related charges after police say he shot himself during an attempted home invasion Saturday night in Hamilton.

Hamilton Police say officers responded to reports of a shooting around 9:30 p.m. in the area of Steven Street between Wilson Street and King Street.

One person suffering from serious gunshot injuries was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators say a trail of blood was located and is believed to be connected to the shooting. It led officers to a discarded firearm.

Police allege the recovered weapon was used during the incident, and later determined the injured person was also the suspected shooter.

The suspect is believed to have accidentally shot himself while attempting to break into a home.

Eric Haines, 38, of Hamilton, has been charged with break and enter, criminal harassment, discharge of a firearm with intent, reckless discharge of a firearm and several firearm possession-related offences, along with four counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Haines was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
