A 45-year-old man has died after he was assaulted at a downtown Hamilton park last week and his alleged attacker was charged with second-degree murder.

With permission of the victim’s family, Hamilton police today (June 26) identified the victim as Antonio (Anthony) Beltrano of Hamilton. Beltrano died of his injuries from the June 22 attack at J.C. Beemer Park, according to police.

Craig Brooks, 37, of Hamilton is facing second-degree murder charges.

Officers arrived within minutes at the pavilion area of the park after they received a 911 call about the assault on June 22 just before 9:30 a.m. The suspect, however, had fled before they arrived, police said.

Officers began providing life-saving measures to Beltrano, who was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition. They arrested Brooks within an hour of the incident in the area of King Street East and Emerald Street South, police said. A day later on June 23, Brooks was charged with aggravated assault and remained in custody. Police said they are not seeking any other suspects.

The homicide unit have interviewed several witnesses. Police are appealing for more witnesses. If you have any information, contact Det. Trevor Bland at 905-546-4921 or [email protected].
