While details are still scarce, a man died last night (January 3) just before midnight on the Fort Erie side of the Peace Bridge when he crashed his car into a concrete barrier near the toll booths.

Niagara Police have not released his identity, his age or even his nationality at this point while their investigation continues.

Apparently, he hit the barrier at “a very high rate of speed,” was ejected from the car, which then burst into flames.

Canada Border Services Agency officers were trying to resuscitate him until the EMS arrived but he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

Part of the QEW was closed during the clean-up but opened shortly afterwards.

Police have not said whether or not he suffered some sort of medical incident (such as a heart attack or stroke) behind the wheel but the Niagara Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Forensic Service Unit are continuing the investigation.
