A 27-year-old man has been charged with stunt driving after police tracked a vehicle travelling at nearly double the speed limit in an area of Mississauga well-known for dangerous driving and street racing.

Earlier this week, a Peel Regional Police Road Safety Services officer pulled over a pickup truck that was speeding at 113 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone near Mavis Rd. and Courtneypark Dr., just north of Hwy. 401.

The driver had his licence suspended for 30 days and the vehicle was impounded for two weeks.

Stunt driving is partially defined as travelling in a vehicle at 40 km/h or more over the speed limit in areas where the posted limit is 80 km/h or lower.

That specific area of the city is well-known for illegal street racing and other aggressive driving behaviours, police have said in recent years.

It’s led them to target the Mavis Rd./Courtneypark Dr. area, among other hotspots in Mississauga and Brampton, in various enforcement campaigns.

In one incident this past spring, a 19-year-old was charged with stunt driving after police pulled over a car for travelling at 151 km/h in a 60 km/h zone near Mavis Rd. and Courtneypark Dr.

Armed with a “zero tolerance” approach to dangerous driving and street racing, Peel police launched Project Noisemaker and ERASE on May 1.

It’s an annual enforcement initiative directly targeting both illegal street racers and “excessively loud vehicles” that create noise pollution. It continues until November.

Police note the six-month campaign is an additional effort to stamp out dangerous driving as officers on the road already target such offenders “24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Police are also asking for the public’s help during the enforcement campaign–and year-round.

They urge anyone with information concerning aggressive driving or street racing activities to call police at 905-453-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
