Man charged with second-degree murder after male fatally injured in Welland

Welland/Pelham area police officers were called to the scene of a homicide last night (Apr. 30).

At approximately 11:40 p.m. three officers responded to a call from a home in the area of Division Street and Alexander Street in Welland.

Police found three individuals upon arrival, two of which had significant injuries.

One male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The second victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Officers located a suspect at the scene and placed him under arrest.

33-year-old Joel Dreaver has been arrested and charged with second degree murder, aggravated assault and two counts of police assault.

Dreaver remains in custody with a bail hearing set for today (May 1) at the John Sopinka Courthouse in Hamilton.

Detectives do not believe there is an on-going threat to the public, but heavy police presence remains in the area as the investigation continues.
