Man charged in ‘unprovoked’ hate-motivated assault in downtown Hamilton: police

A man faces multiple charges following an alleged hate-motivated assault in downtown Hamilton on Saturday, police say.

Hamilton Police say officers responded to reports of an assault in the area of Augusta Street.

Investigators say a woman was standing on a public street when she was approached by a man believed to be intoxicated, who began verbally harassing her using derogatory language.

Police allege the man struck the woman in the face, knocking off and breaking her glasses. The situation escalated, and the woman was pulled to the ground and kicked.

A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault and resisting a peace officer.
