Man charged after Whitby motel suffers $100,000 in damages, fire alarm pulled

A man faces several criminal charges after a major disturbance at a Whitby over the weekend resulted in $100,000 in damages.

Durham Regional police were called to Consumers Dr. and Garden St around 1:30 p.m. July 9. The area is something of home to three motels nearby. Sources nearby later confirmed the incident occured at the Marriott, though police did not specify in their release.

When the officers arrived, DRSP said they found a man destroying property and causing a disturbance. According to police, the man proceeded to pull the fire alarm and use several fire extinguishers in the motel.

Due to the disturbance and the fire alarm, all the motel guest had to evacuate the building. Total damages are estimated at $100,000.

Paul Trenwith, 41 of Pontypool, was arrested and charged with mischief over $5,000, making a false fire alarm, causing a disturbance and possession of crack-cocaine.
