A man is facing charges after allegedly trying to force his way inside a home in Oakville before attempting to steal items from a nearby vehicle.

Halton police allege that on the afternoon of April 2, a man attempted to force his way into a home in the Speers Road and Dorval Drive area. Police say the man rang the doorbell and then attempted to push his way into the home when the homeowner appeared, but was ultimately unable to enter the house.

Police then allege that the suspect made his way down the street and entered a parked vehicle that was unlocked. Police say the man was seen rummaging through items in the car before the owner arrived, prompting the suspect to leave the scene.

Officers located the man a short distance away.

No weapons were seen and no injuries were reported in connection with the incidents.

Police say Hector Santos Portillo, a 32-year-old man with no fixed address, is facing break and enter and theft-related charges.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
