Makeover of main street has Ontario town seeking public feedback

A multi-year project to “refresh and revitalize” Whitby’s main drag is in need of some more public feedback.

The town has already heard from more than 580 residents during the first phase of engagement for the redesign of Brock Street, and has created a draft concept design for the makeover for Whitby’s main north-south thoroughfare – all the way from the exit on Highway 401 to north of the CP rail tracks near Maple Street.

The proposed design for the three-plus kilometre stretch includes concepts for traffic calming, patios, accessible on-street parking, wider sidewalks, lighting, trees, and more. It also features a design for a proposed roundabout to help with traffic calming at Brock Street and Burns Street.

Residents have until October 9 review the design concept and complete a survey to share whether it matches their “vision” for the street.

There will also be an open house next week at the Centennial Building’s Regal Room (416 Centre Street) on Wednesday, September 24 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a drop-in session to learn more about the project and share feedback on key areas.

The draft concept design supports the Community Strategic Plan’s goal of “revitalizing downtowns to strengthen community connections, encourage active transportation and support local business.”

Feedback gathered will be shared with Whitby Town Council to inform future budget planning and final design.
