major trunk sewer work in east mississauga.

Partial park and trail closures in addition to construction noise and dust can be expected in the Cooksville area of Mississauga starting later this summer as workers rehabilitate a “critical” piece of infrastructure.

Peel Region crews will be working on upgrading the Lower Cooksville Trunk Sewer, a “critical underground system” that carries wastewater from area homes and businesses to treatment facilities, Mississauga Ward 7 Coun. Dipika Damerla said this week in an update to the community.

“Construction will begin in phases, with the first phase expected to start later this summer and continue into winter 2027,” the councillor said, adding the work is needed to “help ensure reliable services for years to come.”

The local trunk sewer, a large underground pipe that runs along Cooksville Creek between Burnhamthorpe Road East and south of The Queensway East, is “essential to the health and function of our city,” Damerla noted.

“As this infrastructure has reached the end of its useful life, this project will help extend its lifespan, protect the surrounding environment and maintain safe and reliable service for residents.”

Damerla said that during upcoming construction, residents may notice:

  • Temporary pathway closures and access changes near work areas.
  • Partial closures within Iggy Kaneff Park, including limited access to some play structures.
  • Increased construction activity, including noise and dust.
  • Minor excavation work and rehabilitation of existing maintenance holes.

“Every effort will be made to minimize disruption and maintain access for residents, businesses and emergency services,” the councillor added.

“Investing in this type of infrastructure is essential to supporting growth, protecting our environment and ensuring our community remains strong and resilient.”

In an online description of the major sanitary sewer system rehabilitation project, Peel Region said it will also be repairing a number of maintenance holes, commonly called manholes.

Project leaders at the region also noted the importance of the undertaking.

“Wastewater is created when water goes down a drain or toilet. This sewer runs through environmentally sensitive areas and parkland and is now reaching the end of its useful life, requiring rehabilitation to maintain a safe and reliable service,” they said.

The region added the Cooksville project is part of Peel’s “broader commitment to responsible infrastructure stewardship and long-term service planning.

“Rehabilitating this sewer now, before issues arise, helps reduce the risk of costly emergency repairs, service disruptions and environmental impacts to nearby parkland and Cooksville Creek,” officials continued. “By taking a proactive approach, Peel can extend the useful life of this infrastructure while minimizing disruptions to the public through careful planning, trenchless technologies and phased construction.”

During all phases of the project, including and beyond the work to be completed this year and early in 2027, the region said temporary closures may also be required along/within the following trails and parks:

  • Burnhamthorpe Trail
  • Cooksville Creek Trail
  • Stonebrook Park
  • Cooksville Common
  • Richard Jones Park
  • Cooksville Park
  • Queensway Trail
