Major road closures in Mississauga for parade

Multiple main routes will be closed for hours today due to a parade celebrating the Sikh faith happening in Mississauga.

The parade began on Saturday (May 4) in the Malton area of Mississauga, where parts of Airport Road and Morningstar Drive were closed for most of the day. These closures and others are expected to continue today, May 5.)

The event is a celebration of Khalsa Day, which commemorates the establishment of the Sikh community in 1699, according to the Ontario Sikhs and Gurdwaras Council. Also known as Vaisakhi, Khalsa Day is also the start of the Sikh New Year.

Peel Regional Police are informing residents and drivers of the following road closures which fall in the parades route:

  • Airport Road – Slough Sreet to Derry Road
  • Morningstar Drive – Airport Road to Goreway Drive

The estimated timeframe of the road closures as provided by Peel Public Works will be from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Airport Road is expected to re-open once the parade has cleared at Goreway Drive.

In addition, police say they will be managing traffic and ensuring public safety throughout the day.

Last weekend in Toronto, large crowds, numbering in the thousands, congregated for Khalsa Day events attended by notable figures, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh.
