Thousands of residents across Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby could be in for a dark and snowy night, with the local hydro providers reporting sizable outages in all four lakeside communities.

Elexicon Energy advised that heavy snow is likely to push back the expected time of resumption (ETR), since suboptimal road conditions due to a major snowstorm will delay crews travel to sites. Oshawa Power is reporting small outages.

In alphabetical order, these were the conditions in each Durham community at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 25):

  • More than 5,000 customers in Ajax are affected. Elexicon says “snow” was the cause of the outage.
  • Oshawa, which is served by Oshawa Power (OPUC), has a skein of small outages. At last report, about 562 OPUC customers were powerless across a total of 11 outages.
  • Pickering: There are two outages in the city. There is no ETR for the larger outage, which Elexicon says is affecting between “501 and 5,000” customers. Another outage has been traced to a tree falling on a hydro line, and it is expected it will take until 2 a.m. (early Thursday) to repair. Under 500 customers are affected by that outage.
  • The Whitby outage is also estimated to be in that 501-5,000 range, and also on account of snow. Elexicon says an “investigation is in progress,” so an ETR is not yet available.
