Westbound Hwy. 401 traffic through the heart of Mississauga is moving much faster now that a new stretch of express lanes has opened.

After some two years of heavy traffic delays in the area, the westbound express lanes have been extended from west of Mavis Rd. to Winston Churchill Blvd. and are now open to vehicles without any more lane restrictions.

The extension, which now gives westbound Hwy. 401 a full express and collector system across Mississauga with the exception of a small stretch of highway between Winston Churchill Blvd. and Hwy. 407, is part of a $640-million Hwy. 401 expansion project.

The undertaking began construction in 2019 and includes the widening of 18 kilometres of Hwy. 401 from Mississauga to Milton.

Monday westbound commuters have already noticed the difference, with one stating to insauga.com that, “This is great. There are no more bottlenecks in that area of the 401.”

In late summer, westbound express lanes opened between Hwy. 407 and James Snow Pkwy. in Milton.

Meanwhile, eastbound express lanes of Hwy. 401 in the same area are still under construction.

All work is on track to be completed by the end of 2022.

The huge expansion project also includes reconstruction of bridges as well as upgrades to support facilities and features.

Once completed, the Ontario government says the expanded highway will include:

  • 12-lane core-collector system from the Credit River to Winston Churchill Blvd.
  • 10 lanes from Winston Churchill Blvd. to Hwy. 407 ETR/ Hwy. 401 interchange
  • 12-lane core-collector system from Hwy. 407 ETR/ Hwy. 401 interchange to James Snow Pkwy.
  • 10 lanes from James Snow Pkwy. to RR 25
  • median High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes
  • new or improved support facilities and features, such as drainage, lighting, signage and carpool lots

West Corridor Constructors was awarded the contract to design, build and finance the Hwy. 401 expansion project.

Some 250,000 vehicles travel on Hwy. 401 in Peel and Halton each day.
