Major Ontario shopping mall shut down for holiday weekend after watermain rupture

Pickering’s City Centre mall was shut down and retailers were evacuated Saturday after a watermain rupture beneath the main atrium, resulting in substantial structural damage to the main floor.

Emergency services were on the scene Saturday morning at the Shops at Pickering City Centre, with the mall closed as a precautionary measure.

Pickering councillor Maurice Brenner said the city’s buildings division was informed and a fire watch implemented due to the loss of running water in the building.

Repairs to the watermain will necessitate excavation of the floor, he added.

The Shops at City Centre said in a social media post the main retail portion of the mall will remain closed through the holiday weekend and re-open Tuesday.

“We appreciate your patience.”

Retailers with outside entrances or have stand-alone buildings, including the Cineplex theatres, Jack Astor’s, Dave’s Hot Chicken, State & Main, Moxies, Farm Boy and East Side Mario’s, were able to open for business Sunday.
