For its third year running, a major literary festival that celebrates diverse authors is coming to Brampton!
Brampton’s a culturally diverse city and a ton of art and culture stems from here, so it’s no surprise that the Festival of Literary Diversity (FOLD) is returning to Brampton from Thursday May 3-Sunday May 6, 2018.
Hundreds of people attend the event every year, so if you’re an avid reader, writer, or you just love events, you’ll definitely want to get in on the action.
This year, the FOLD boasts 26 unique events, and you get snag tickets to individual events (some of which are free), or even day passes (ballpark $50) to check out full days of programming.
And, yes, you can also get an all-access pass where you can attend any event at the FOLD and get breakfast on Sunday morning for just over $100.
A whopping 21 big-name speakers will also be there throughout the artistic weekend for different events, including Jillian Tamaki, Maria Qamar, Rabindranath Maharaj, and even Kim Thuy.
What events can you expect?
Well, the entire weekend kicks off with a trivia night at the always delicious J. Red & Co on May 3 and ends off with the reveal of the One Book One Brampton shortlist on May 6, where residents can vote for their favourite books.
In between, you’ll find events like a youth spoken word showcase featuring such local talent as Lamoi and Wali Shah, a publishing 101 workshop for all of those budding writers wondering about the biz, a writer’s court where industry professionals will critique emerging authors’ first few pages of their unpublished manuscripts, and even seminars about what it’s like to write romance novels and comics.
Events are taking place across Brampton, at venues such as City Hall, PAMA, and the Courtyard Marriott on Biscayne.
Brampton resident, published author, professional speaker, and founder of the FOLD, Jael Richardson is the mastermind behind the major literary event.
Richardson’s first novel, The Stone Thrower: A Daughter’s Lessons, a Father’s Life, about her father, former CFL quarterback Chuck Ealey, was published in 2012, and she has continued her career in writing ever since.
The FOLD has been releasing reading challenges leading up to the event, which are fun ways to get hyped about reading and writing prior to the spring event. They basically challenge you to read different books by diverse authors.
