Professional cricket returns to Brampton this summer as the city prepares to host the National Cricket League (NCL) 20 Canada tournament from July 16 to Aug. 1.

City officials joined representatives from the National Cricket League to officially launch the tournament, which will bring international cricket talent, local players and fans to Brampton for a 24-match competition featuring six franchise teams, including the Brampton Blazers.

Mayor Patrick Brown, members of council, National Cricket League chairman Arun Agarwal and community partners gathered for the announcement, which city officials say reflects Brampton’s growing reputation as a hub for major sporting events and supports the city’s long-term sport tourism strategy.

The upcoming season is expected to feature a mix of global cricket stars and emerging Canadian players, while player registration remains open for aspiring athletes hoping to compete professionally.

“NCL, in its short history, has created new standards in cricket. We are proud to reintroduce professional cricket to the City of Brampton,” Agarwal said in a statement. “This season promises to be the largest and most dynamic yet, with strong collaboration from the City of Brampton. We are equally committed to giving back to this vibrant city and the Province of Ontario by actively engaging local vendors, hotels and restaurants, and contributing to meaningful economic growth within the community.”

Brampton has increasingly branded itself as the “Cricket Capital of Canada,” with the sport continuing to grow rapidly across the city. Officials say cricket now plays a major role in local recreation, community engagement and youth programming.

The city has invested approximately $10 million over the past two years into cricket infrastructure improvements, including field upgrades and lighting enhancements. Brampton currently has 23 cricket fields, with additional facilities planned in the coming years.

Among the major projects is the Earnscliffe Park Cricket Facility, which is expected to become Brampton’s first year-round cricket venue when it opens.

City officials say more than 115 organizations currently use Brampton’s cricket amenities, with more than 18,000 hours of field time booked annually.

Additional upgrades include improvements at Creditview Sandalwood Park and a joint-use cricket pitch at Turner Fenton Secondary School. A future multi-purpose cricket facility has also been proposed as part of the City Lands development.

Alongside professional cricket, the city is also expanding youth programming through its Youth Cricket League, sponsored by Centaur Products Inc.

The league is designed to introduce children to the sport while helping young players develop skills and confidence in a community-focused environment.

Programs include equipment, jerseys and weekly evening sessions featuring both skill development and gameplay.

The summer 2026 sessions include:

  • U9 League: Mondays from June 29 to Aug. 31 at Blue Oak Park
  • U12 League: Tuesdays from June 30 to Sept. 1 at Blue Oak Park

Registration for the youth leagues opens June 1 through the city’s recreation portal.
