Major Company to Cut 133 Jobs in Brampton

Brampton might be a hotspot for development right now – tons of institutions and major companies have their eyes on the Flower City – but it looks like some companies are withdrawing their presence here.

According to The Canadian Press, Dixie Cup manufacturer Georgia-Pacific is cutting 133 jobs at its Brampton manufacturing plant.

The plant is located at 228 Queen Street West.

Georgia-Pacific announced the plan this week, and its employees were informed last week.

The company says that a total of 128 manufacturing workers and five customer service employees will lose their jobs.

When will the plant close?

According to spokesman Kelly Ferguson, Georgia-Pacific will close its doors in Brampton no later than the fourth quarter of its fiscal year.

Georgia-Pacific has confirmed that the decision is based on business needs and consumer demand.

While several companies are moving into Brampton, for Georgia-Pacific, consumer demand is low.

Ferguson says that though Dixie Cups are still in demand, Georgia-Pacific’s Canadian customers are purchasing from other manufacturers.

And while many companies are straying from single-use plastics like cups and straws, Ferguson says that since Dixie cups are made of paper, that may not play a big role in the plant’s closure.

The company’s U.S. plants that manufacture Dixie cups will remain open.
