The Luminato Festival is coming back to the GTA this summer with the Canadian premiere of a celebrated display right here in Brampton.

Luminato Festival Toronto is an international arts festival in June featuring two free weekends of arts and celebration, and this year the festival is bringing the Canadian debut of Walk with Amal to Brampton.

The exhibit features a 12-foot-tall puppet named Little Amal, whose name means “hope” in Arabic. Amal is a 10-year-old Syrian refugee who has been travelling the world since 2021, and the puppet represents all children fleeing war, violence and persecution.

Little Amal will visit Canada for the first time during the opening of the 2023 festival and make his Canadian debut in Brampton on June 7.

“When Amal finds herself alone in Bramalea, a group of local mothers respond in different ways to her distress. A soothing lullaby lures her around the community as she searches for the one mother she knows, but cannot find,” Luminato said of the Brampton premier.

Over the last two years, Little Amal has travelled more than 8,000 kilometres on her tour around the world, starting in Syria and making stops in Greece, Italy, France, and the UK among other countries.

After debuting in Brampton, Little Amal will walk across the GTA for 5 days looking for her new home.

“Little Amal will be welcomed to Toronto by musicians, dancers, children, elders, and everyone in between,” Luminatos said.

Walk with Amal premiers in Brampton on June 9 at a yet-to-be-announced location. For more information on Walk with Amal and Luminato visit www.luminatofestival.com.
