Burlington’s loose-leaf collection program is currently underway with collection in zone 3 set to take place later this week.

Residents in zone 3 are reminded to leave their leaves at the curb no more than two days before the pick-up date and to keep bike lanes and sidewalks clear.

Each collection zone will have only one pick-up, so residents are advised that loose leaves placed after the zone start date will not be collected.

Additionally, to ensure the safety of collection crews and avoid damaging equipment, residents are advised to keep the loose-leaf piles free of debris and sticks.

For the program, which began on Nov. 14, residents are encouraged to check the leaf collection schedule and zone map.

As a result of the program being underway, City officials have issued some tips for residents.

“In order to increase the availability for residents to use the City’s loose-leaf collection service, we have consolidated the pickup schedule to three weeks and moved this year’s collection dates back one week in the hope that more leaves can be collected before the winter weather arrives,” said Enrico Scalera, director of Roads, Parks and Forestry.

“Please monitor the weather as your collection date approaches. If snow or freezing rain is forecast, be prepared to bag or mulch your leaves. Mulching leaves with your mower is the most environmentally friendly option to add nutrients and naturally fertilize your lawn.”

Should the collection be delayed or cancelled as a result of the weather or other circumstances, residents may call 905-335-7777 for updates or check the city website.
