Commuters in Burlington will be able to get a deal on transit beginning Monday.

Burlington Transit and GO Transit have partnered to offer free co-fares to transit users. The program promotes using local transit as part of users’ GO Transit journey.

According to a Burlington spokesperson, using local transit with GO is better for the environment and reduces congestion. Riders can use their PRESTO Card to take advantage of the co-fare savings.

“This new fare program with GO Transit is a great addition to our existing programs for seniors and children, as well as our SPLIT program with Halton Region,” said Sue Connor, director of Burlington Transit.

“Not only do we need to make transit more convenient for everyone, we also need to make sure it is an affordable option for Burlington residents and commuters who rely on both local and regional transit.”

To get the free/discounted co-fare, tap on Burlington Transit and GO Transit using a PRESTO card and riders will automatically get the free co-fare.

When taking Burlington Transit first:

  • Ride Burlington Transit and pay the fare
  • Get on GO Transit and your GO Transit fare will be discounted by the value of the Burlington Transit fare

When taking GO Transit first:

  • Travel on GO Transit and pay the fare
  • Get on a Burlington Transit bus and it’s the same as a transfer, no extra fees

For a Burlington adult who commutes every weekday using Burlington Transit and GO Transit, this could add up to savings of more than $200 a year. There are four GO Transit options in Burlington: Aldershot GO, Appleby GO, Burlington GO and the 407 Carpool lot (buses only).

Burlington Transit also offers free passes for low income residents. This pass is called the SPLIT Pass, Subsidized Passes for Low Income Transit, and is offered in partnership with Halton Region.

Customers interested in the program may apply and register with Halton Region. Those who qualify will receive a free PRESTO monthly pass from Burlington Transit.

Seniors also ride for free on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and children aged 12 and under ride for free.
