Heads up, drivers — you’ll soon no longer need to renew your licence plate stickers.

Effective Sunday, March 13, the province will scrap the fee as well as the requirement for drivers to have a licence plate sticker.

While the renewal process will still be in place, it will cost drivers nothing and mean fewer line-ups at Service Ontario.

The move gained overwhelming approval within the Conservative caucus when it was presented, with the government saying it could save the province as much as $29 million in postage alone over the next five years.

Drivers can expect to receive a refund if they paid for their sticker on or after March 2020 and are in good standing with no tickets, or if all tickets have been paid.

Vehicle owners should receive cheques in the mail starting at the end of March. They will still have to renew their plates every one or two years to ensure their insurance is still valid and pay any outstanding tolls or fines.
