Mississauga residents are being encouraged to get serious about preserving the planet by participating in a number of local Earth Day events in the coming weeks.

The City of Mississauga is hosting a series of events from April 13-23 to mark Earth Day 2022, which is being celebrated across Canada and around the world on April 22.

“These environmentally-focused events will educate residents on sustainable actions they can take to protect the environment while helping to make Mississauga more climate change-resilient,” Mississauga officials said in a press release.

“Earth Days 2022 furthers the actions set out in the City’s Climate Change Action Plan by educating residents about climate change action. The plan includes 21 key actions to be implemented by 2030, including meaningful engagement opportunities for residents.”

Earth Days is an annual campaign featuring City initiatives and events delivered with the support of local partners that help educate residents on the importance of environmental sustainability.

Events open to the public include One Million Trees and the 20-minute Makeover.

One Million Trees is a 20-year program to encourage residents, schools, community groups and businesses to join the City’s tree-planting efforts to plant more trees on both public and private lands in Mississauga.

This year, the tree-planting event takes place on Saturday, April 23 from 9:30 a.m. till noon at various parks around Mississauga.

The 20-minute Makeover runs beyond Earth Days, taking place May 1 until June 30. Groups are encouraged to clean up a park or roadway in their community.

Other events planned for Earth Days 2022 include: a free session on how to start your own vegetable garden; a free session on how to space your garden plants apart; a guide to living with less waste; an event in Streetsville to show participants the City’s new electric vehicle charging stations (and staff will be on hand to talk about electric vehicles); and a Sketch Night to learn how to draw the nature around you.

For more information on these and other Earth Days 2022 events scheduled in the coming weeks, and to register, visit the City’s website.

If unable to take part in any events, City officials urge people to take environmental actions at home that include:

  • eating a more plant-based diet or meat substitute
  • starting a conversation about climate change with friends and family
  • driving less or consider using an electric vehicle
  • walking, cycling or taking transit
  • planting trees
  • growing or sourcing local food
  • planting a rain garden
  • hanging clothes to dry
  • conserving more and wasting less
  • replacing light bulbs with energy-efficient bulbs
  • clearing storm drains of blockages
