Forest and tree canopy protection organization LEAF will be in Whitby on Earth Day this Saturday for a family-friendly community tree planting event in D’Hillier Park in Whitby.

The event is an opportunity to celebrate nearly three years since expanding LEAF’s tree planting programs to Durham Region and will have executives from LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) and the Town of Whitby, volunteer representatives from the Trillium Foundation and the local community and local MPP Lorne Coe in attendance.

Janet McKay, Executive Director of LEAF, will be talking about the growth of the LEAF program to Durham Region since 2020, highlighting accomplishments related to habitat creation through tree planting activities on private and public land.

Local volunteers will then plant 300 native trees and shrubs to help grow the urban forest in Whitby. Participants can also visit LEAF’s education booth to find resources on the benefits of the urban forest and how to protect and enhance it.
