The leader of Ontario’s Green Party is joining Oakville’s fight to stop the spread of urban sprawl in Halton Region.

Green leader Mike Schreiner will officially join in the fray tomorrow when he hosts a virtual media conference to call on Halton to stop the disappearance of green space as proposed in new Regional planning documents.

Halton Region is considering replacing 2,120 hectares of mostly agricultural land in Milton and Halton Hills to accommodate future housing and industrial needs.

Last week, Oakville councillors took the side of local environmentalists to call a halt to growth plans and instead backed increased intensification in existing urban settings

After its decision last week, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton called on Halton Region to save the farmland.

“The land use decisions we make now are irreversible and will affect our future generations,” Burton said.

Backing Schreiner at tomorrow’s session will be political leaders from across Halton.
