A 57-year-old Hamilton double murder suspect is dead following a long standoff with police.
In an update provided by Hamilton Police this morning, they confirmed the man’s death.
According to the SIU (Special Investigations Unit), at approximately 10 p.m. (May 27), there was an exchange of gunfire between the man and a police officer. The man was struck and pronounced deceased at the scene.
Officers initially arrived at the scene around 5:30 p.m. yesterday (May 27) after reports of gunfire at the home located in the Barton St. and Jones Rd. area. There they discovered the bodies of a man and a woman who lived in the house.
Investigators say the couple was gunned down trying to flee the residence following a dispute with their landlord.
Police say the couple were engaged to be married and not involved in any criminality.
The 27-year-old female victim was an educational assistant at the Catholic school board in Brant County, and the 28-year-old male victim was an electrician. Police say they won’t be releasing their names.
According to police, the dispute was not about a missed rental payment but more about the state of repair at the home.
Hamilton police spokeswoman Jackie Penman says the Special Investigations Unit has been contacted and has invoked its mandate.
Families of both victims have been notified.
Several witnesses have already been interviewed by the Homicide Unit and have been cooperative.
Police continue to appeal for more witnesses. If you have any information, please contact Detective Robert DiIanni at 905-546-3836.
