Two library systems in Niagara Region are officially fine free as of 2022.

Niagara Falls made their announcement a couple of days back that fines were no longer a thing. The fact is Niagara Falls libraries have been fine-free throughout the pandemic but the library board decided to make it a permanent thing recently.

Welland just joined the club, saying, “We will be moving to a fine free service model in 2022.”

“Beginning in January, we are taking this step towards growing an inclusive, barrier-free library.”

In both case. existing late fees will be cleared from user accounts, and they will cease to accrue fees for overdue materials.

However, the Welland Public Library said it’s not a free-for-all. “Borrowing restrictions for patrons with overdue items will continue to apply and replacement fees for lost or damaged materials will continue to be levied.”
