A Mexican restaurant that opened with much fanfare has closed its Mississauga location after just two years of operation.
Tita’s Mexican Food closed at 1852 Lakeshore Road West recently, with new tenants already planning to occupy the space.
The shutdown of the Mississauga location follows Tita’s closures of locations in Etobicoke and Toronto.
Tita’s was known for offering authentic Mexican cuisine such as birria, a traditional meat stew or soup from the state of Jalisco.
The restaurant also had a reputation for serving up traditional favourites such as tacos, enchiladas and chilaquiles.
Tita’s began as a catering company that was eager to create awareness about traditional, homemade Mexican food.
The restaurant chain’s website, which appears to be no longer operational, said that founder Istra Avila was inspired by her grandmother, who loved to cook.
“Her kitchen was a wondrous place,” Avila stated on the website. “Every day was filled with a new flavour, a new recipe, a new dish the whole family couldn’t get enough of. Not just a fantastic cook, but also a wonderful teacher, who took joy in sharing her secrets with me and the whole family.”
