Lane-splitting motorcyclist collides with SUV on 401 in Ajax

A 25-year-old motorcyclist is in serious condition after colliding with the back end of an SUV on Highway 401 in Ajax.
The OPP Highway Safety Division have closed the right westbound lane of Highway 401 at Westney Road due to the collision.
Media Relations officer Kerry Schmidt said the driver was believed to be travelling at a high rate of speed before impact.
“He likely took the off ramp to get around traffic, doing some high-speed passing of other traffic,” Schmidt said in a video posted to Twitter.

The northbound on-ramp to the 401 from Westney Road has also been closed as the investigation continues.
“This is not a racetrack,” Schmidt said. “This is not the way to be using our highways here where everyone is trying to get to their destination safely.”
