The Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) recently announced that it has acquired 50 acres of land along the escarpment for a project that will help create more wetlands and more green space on the east mountain.

The acquisition, the HCA said in a notice posted on its website, will create a link from the Devil’s Punchbowl Conservation Area to the new Saltfleet Conservation Area, located along First Road East in Upper Stoney Creek, where an ambitious wetland restoration program is well underway.

“This is exciting and important news both for the wetland restoration project and for conservation area visitors,” said HCA chair and city councillor, Lloyd Ferguson.

“It creates new space for the creation and restoration of wetlands and provides additional space for people to enjoy nature on the east mountain.”

To date, the HCA said that approximately 300 acres of land along the east mountain escarpment have been purchased for the Saltfleet wetland restoration project.

Two of four proposed wetlands, that will help prevent flooding and erosion in lower Stoney Creek, are now in development the HCA said.

With this latest purchase, a third will soon be underway. Work on a fourth wetland will get underway once more land is acquired.

“This is something the HCA staff and Board have been working towards over the past few years and as Chairman of the HCA it’s wonderful to see it come to fruition,” Ferguson said.

“The Devil’s Punchbowl Area is increasingly popular and this new land will give visitors more options to enjoy the area adjacent to the brow and our new Saltfleet Conservation Area.”
