Lakeridge Health Oshawa reporting a COVID-related death, the sixth in Durham this week

COVID-19 claimed one more Durham resident yesterday with Lakeridge Health Oshawa reporting a death of one of its patients. With another late reporting death added from last Saturday, that makes six deaths from the virus in the past week – half from Oshawa.

Outbreaks at 35 long-term care homes and retirement residences are still climbing, with 215 people now isolating, including 40 at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa. There are 28 affected at Glen Hill Strathaven in Bowmanville and Bay Ridges in Pickering is reporting 21.

Lakeridge Health Oshawa, which had six different outbreaks Wednesday, is now dealing with five, with 15 isolating, while Lakeridge Health Whitby has 17 people with the virus. Other major outbreaks include Orchard Villa (13), Village of Taunton Mills (12 at the LTCH, five at the retirement residence), Hillsdale Terraces (11) and Fairview Lodge (10).

There were 389 new cases of the virus reported in Durham Region Thursday, with Oshawa reporting the most at 110, followed by Ajax with 91. The active case count stands at 8,567, which is up 128 from yesterday as many cases get resolved.

There are 182 people in hospital (with 63 “under investigation”), with 15 in ICU.

There are two workplace outbreaks reported: one in the agriculture sector and one in retail.
