This year, Labour Day falls on Monday, Sept. 1 in Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Clarington and the rest of Durham Region.
Originally declared to honour hard-working men and women and give them a day of rest, it is now just another work day (albeit with extra pay) for many in the restaurant and tourist sector.
Durham Region Labour Council will host the annual Labour Day Picnic at Memorial Park to recognize the contributions of workers, with music, children’s entertainment and face painting, hotdogs and ice-cream.
Open:
- Many restaurants, especially those with patios. Call ahead to be sure.
- Movie theatres
- Camp Samac outdoor pool in Oshawa will have swimming (1-3, 3:30-5:30, 6-7:30) and Delpark Homes Centre will also be open for swimming, with regular admission. Ajax Memorial Pool will also be open for public swimming.
- Outdoor recreational facilities, such as parks, beaches and splash pads
- Three Beer Stores in Durham:
– 200 Ritson Rd. N in Oshawa
– 75 Kingston Rd. E in Ajax
– 3950 Brock St. N in Whitby - Most craft breweries that are normally open Mondays, including Town Brewery (12-6 at the tap room and 11-9 at the waterfront Pump House) in Whitby, with staff expecting a “high volume” of traffic. Call ahead to your favourite brewery to be sure it is open.
- Your Independent Grocer in Port Perry and the Wine Rack location inside at 1893 Scugog Street
- Many private tourist attractions, including Oshawa’s Parkwood Estates and Oshawa Zoo.
- Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Clarington hosts their Labour Day Weekend Sprints (NASCAR Canada’s Sunday feature is the Weather Tech 200) but the event will wrap Sunday
- All three casinos: Pickering Casino Resort, Ajax Casino and Blue Heron Casino on Scugog
- Most cannabis stores
Closed:
- Pickering Town Centre and Oshawa Centre will be closed, though most restaurants with patios or street-facing entrances will be open
- Most grocery stores and retail outlets.
- Museums and art galleries
- City and Town offices, libraries, most pools and community centres
- Municipally-operated tourist places, such as Pickering Museum Village
- Municipal animal shelters
- Shopping plazas, though some stores, such as convenience stores, will remain open
- All LCBO outlets
- Canada Post
Waste Management
Garbage and recycling will be collected the next day for everyone who normally has Monday service in Durham
Transit
Durham Transit will operate on a holiday/weekend schedule; GO Trains on a Saturday schedule.
