Fort Erie residents hoping for a quick dip in the Fort Erie Kinsmen Pool to beat the summer heat will have to wait until next year.

Due to what a staff report called “extensive damage to the pumps and filtration system” and the Town’s uncertainty of what COVID-19 restrictions would be in place this year, Town Staff elected not to bring forward a budget request for the funds to fix the pool.

Staff indicated that since the pandemic leaves very many activities up in the air, they also cited “the desire to keep taxes low for property owners.”

Until last year, the pool was operated and maintained by the Fort Erie Recovery Unit, a team of speciality divers often used in water rescue and recovery.

However, when the agreement with the Town expired last year during the peak of COVID-19, it was not renewed

Making matters even more costly, the winter weather caused even further damage to the outdoor pool’s mechanical equipment.

However, the Town added that residents wishing to cool down can still the water spray pads at Bertie Centennial Park (Ferndale Park), Crystal Ridge Park, Stevensville Memorial Park, as well as the multi-use water feature at Ridgeway Village Square.
